Hi everyone. Im going to buy a slider soon and I think I have it narrowed down to the Hitachi 8/12 or 10″. Id like to know how many of you consider the double bevel capability and the larger blade on the 10″ worth the extra 200 dollars? Also what is your opinion on the belt drive on the 10″ vs. the gear drive on the 8/12? Does anyone think there might be a better saw? Im using it mostly for furniture and trim work.My main concern is if the double bevel is a feature that is used very often. thanks for any feedback!

Marty, I've got the 8 1/2" and it's run without a hitch. I know a few guys that have the 10 inch, and without exception, all like it. They also have good tool habits, so no stories of piling wheel barrows and pavers on top... just good results with ordinary care. I'll pick up the 10" Hitachi Slide as soon as I see it drop another $50 US... so far, waiting has been very-very good to me. My only observation, is the new competition has larger tables and taller fences, a nice feature when standing crown mouldings, but one where you could install an auxiliary fence if needed. (The holes are there already for that.)
*Marty, if you're doing furniture and trim, especially any pre-finished stuff, the double bevel saw is the ticket. No more chipping out the face 'cause I have to cut a bevel from the backside. IMHO, the Hitachi is way overpriced, and there are other contenders.
*I agree w/ Billy. Don't limit yourself to the Hitachis. They were the innovators in 88, 89 but without a redesign since then you're buying old tech. Though Hitachi hasn't said so I expect they'll do a redesign in the next year or two and you'll just be buying thier old stock today.Check out Makita 1013 or Dewalt. They're cost competitive w/ Hitachi. I've spent the last 6 months with 12 models on my jobs and just shot photos for FHB #125 or 126 review of them all.If you opt Hitachi go for the 10". The wire exit on the 8 1/2" handle will annoy you as well as to jumpy starts and stops. The belt drive is nice without yanking the handle out of your hand. Ours is 6 years old and no worse for wear.
*Mike, so we've seen a preview of the new article...want to let your old, "no worse for the wear" 10 inch go for cheap? While I haven't been knighted as worthy of contributing to FHB, I have some minor experience with mitre saws, and regular day to day tool abuse. As I stated, the Hitachi 10 inch SCM could use a fence upgrade/update, but I haven't found anyone willing to let theirs go for cheap. The Makita or the Dewalt? One's a behemoth, the other you need to crane around to the side to read the mitre scale. Oh that's smart. Yes, the wire is a pain on the 8 1/2"Hitachi, but it's original and "no worse for the wear."
