So would I, especially in prep and cleaning. My customer is using Kemiko Stone tone stain (www.kemiko.com) but their site offers no info on process (other than an offer to buy an instructional video). What I got from local distributor is that surface should be very clean and as highly polished as possible as the desired result is to simulate a marble surface. Also, staining should be one of the last things done before move-in.
If you haven't poured yet, tell your finisher to burn that sucker and then, somehow, keep it clean while you're building rest of house as rust stains from nails won't come out.
I was going along pretty well until brick mason hit the job, so any advice on removing mortar without damaging slabs would be appreciated.
This advice applies to non-acid stains---not sure about etching stains.
Will keep you posted as I will be at this stage in about a month.
*BEd, here are a couple of sites, not a lot of info but some help.http://www.acid-stain.com/wwwboard//index.htmlhttp://www.acid-stain.com/This third site has SOME prima donna "We are Professionals, do not attempt this at home, you lowly DIY'ers" types and some knowledgable & helpful advice. http://decorative-concrete.net/bbs/wwwboard.htmlIf you are buying it long distance, the acid stains are shipped as hazardous materials and it ain't cheap. Make some samples and try it before you do it, it's not coming off once you've done it. And acid etching is a no no. Nothing left to stain after that. Joe H
*B, thanks for the reply. My project is an old basement that had carpet on it. It has a few areas that has some glue on it, but nothing bad. Not too long ago I noticed my gym having some of this done, but I didn't pay attention. After carpet removal they startd out with old black cut back on the floor. Cleaned it, stained semi transparent patterns on it, and applied some type of high gloss finish. I assume some type of poly. The original floor was very rough but turned out very nice.As for your mortar, I have no ideas ,other than acid or a scraper. Anyway ,will look forward to hearing how it turns out for you.
*JOE, Thanks for the site info, looks like everything is there. Bill

*I considered staining but after various horror stories from colleagues, I decided to go with an acrylic-modified resin system. It is a thin coating that goes over existing concrete. It can be patterned and colored. One product under consideration is Texture-Crete by Increte Systems.www.increte.com Don't have any experience with it yet, but I will give it a try.
