I’m planing on installing ceramic tile over an existing concrete floor. There is presently a hairline crack running through the middle of the floor. I believe I’ve heard if I install the tile directly over the floor that the crack will propagate up through the tile. Does anyone know if this is in fact true? If so, would installing the tile over the cement backer board help and how would I attach the backer board to the concrete floor? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It depends on the crack.
If the crack is stable and not the beginning of a larger crack, no problem.
Modern adhesives are forgiving and more flexible than the older mixes.

*The crack will in most cases appear in the tile. You can use an anti-fracture membrane over the entire floor, and lay tile on that. Custom has one, Laticrete has one. The Custom brand is a trowelable membrane that isolates the floor from the tile, thus stopping the crack from coming up. The Laticrete is the same idea, only it involves painting the floor, laying a mesh in the paint, and painting over the mesh again. Both work and add les that 1/16 to your floor highth.Scott
