John;
I use Soss hinges for hidden doors,the margins can be nearly nothing, and they are plenty durable,and will handle a lot of wieght. The snap shows two hidden doors in a raised panel wall system, one on the left and one on the right. Just dont let the painter put any finish on the hinges.

Legs;
Thanks for the compliment, and I am a 1954 model.I also found a snap of my door butting jig,I will post when I can get my camera to act right. The large Soss hinges will carry a good deal of wieght, but to relieve the jamb of excess weight, adding a caster is a good idea. John, I have done serveral "rooms" like that, and am still pulling air.

I'm building a library for a customer who wants two hidden doors built in(R.O. about 28"x58")
I have a pretty good idea how I'm going to do it, but there's no sense in re-inventing the wheel. So if anyone knows of a source for specialty hdwr. for this, or if you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them.
Thanks, John
*FHB had an article about this several years back. Time flies, might have been five years. I remember it as having a complete explanation of wheel invention and sources for the heavy duty trick hardware. Imagining things, Joe H
*JRS, you can get pretty creative with some panel moulding and 35mm concealed cup hinges. Most manufacturers offer a "thick door" version that kicks the hinge side of the door out to avoid binding when it's opened. I've used these a couple of times in a similar situation and it worked really well. Chuck

*Brisketbean,Thanks for the info. The doors I need to build are actually going to be bookshelves, so the the hinges will need to be plenty heavy. Do you think the Soss hinges are up to it?The doors will open into the concealed rooms(away from you as you face them) so clearance shouldn't be a problem. I can conceal the door margin completely with trim. I thought maybe a piano hinge would do the trick, and if the weight was too much, perhaps a castor on the strike side of the door for support. He would also like a "secret" latch to hold the door shut, and enable him to lock it.(Sure hope this doesn't mean he'll have to kill me when the job is done! : } )Thanks, John
*Yeah, if the door is swinging into the priest hole, I'd use a piano hinge and two swivel casters. I did a hinged bookcase just like that last year. The casters take the weight off the hinge. Works great. Maybe some type of ball catch to latch it closed?And brisket - you the man. Very nicely done. Do you mind if I ask how old you are?
