plumbbill | Posted in General Discussion on November 17, 2006 10:28am

Just caught on news crane falls killing one. http://www.nwcn.com/topstories/stories/NW_111606WABcranecollapseKC.44a853cf.html

I’ll take my camera to work tommorrow, see if I can get a view from my 42story roof.

My job is at #1 crane looks like it’s probably just south of #2 there is 5 cranes up right in that area I’m not sure which one went down.

I didn't have time to walk over there & get some up close & personal ones.

The crane operator had a hellova ride--- I wonder what color his shorts ended up being going from 210' to 30'.

Since the're just starting the garage part there were no side supports, just straight stick for about 220'.

Our best guess on our job is he made an overweight pic the other day & stressed the base.

Here is one from my roof.

Yeah this is Bellevue, the big money of Seattle.

We had 3 of those ladder trucks on our job when the manlift got stuck where there was no opening into the building, about 100' off the ground.

There was 20 guys on the lift & the GC had no plan incase of lift failure in that spot & the guys knew it.

So about 10 of them called 911 on their cells.

2 &1/2 minutes later 3 ladder trucks came in from the 3 different entrances.

Cost the GC big time----- the next safety meeting the GC told us not to call 911.

Can you imagine sitting in your own apartment, and being killed by a crane ?The last thought must be about the same as the soldier surrounded by all the latest and greatest military equipment and being killed by an arrow or spear...

Yeah I don't know if heard it buckling & bouncin off the other buildings first.

That would suck----- hear a noise go to the window & look to see about 10tons of orange/yellow bars commin at ya.

Lease Crutcher Lewis is the general on that job I have done a lot of work with them over the years I'm pretty sure I have met that crane operator at one time  or another.“It so happens that everything that is stupid is not unconstitutional.” —Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia

The Seattle PI has an article today saying that the driver of the crane has had convictions for drug abuse.  also the Seattle Times reported the accident and gave a list of accidents for years back.

Cranes fall all the time. OSHA has some rules I think, but many ignore them.
Rules we dont need no stinking .........

If drugs were inviloved it will be known real quick.

Any accident is automatic pee test.

That exact thing happened in NYC a couple of years ago. We've had several crane collapses in the last decade and in one case a section of the boom IIRC pierced through the roof of a building an impaled some poor old lady in her bed.

That is an ugly situation. When I lived in CA there were a few of those in downtown San Francisco. One fell on the street and crushed some rush-hour traffic.

  2. Renoun | Nov 20, 2006 05:10am | #14

I don't think that I know that operator but my aunts company uses Morrow cranes all the time and the guys from Northwest Tower Crane usually put them up. I have worked on a few of the crane erections with these guys and they are very careful. It sounds like this crane was sitting on a non-traditional foundation of steel beams and piers rather than the normal reinforced concrete foundation which may have been a factor. We also had a big wind storm earlier in the week which could have stressed the structure of the crane.

The crane hit so many buildings on the way down that the regional Urban Search and Rescue Team that trains for earthquake rescue was called out. As it stands now only one person was killed, even a half hour earlier in the day would have been a very different story.

We're kinda doubtin the wind, they free spin like a weather vane when not in use.

Actual cause is gonna be tricky, that hole was dug 6yrs ago by a different contractor.

It was another big Bellevue job that got shut down from the "dot-carnage" that went on.

The base is concrete, but origonally set up for a different crane. I think they had to fabricate a transition piece inbetween the two.

I drive by that twice a day entering & leaving my job, luckily on N E 4th & not 108th.“It so happens that everything that is stupid is not unconstitutional.” —Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia
