Hi All
I went to look at a home made shower today that leaks. No surprise right? It is in a cottage so a complete re-build is a last resort (although it is by far my first choice). Is there any product any of you know of that can be applied to the base of the shower an then tiled over that is usually successful? I’m sceptical of these types of fixes but want to be informed when I call this customer back. Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately there is no easy fix. A a waterproof shower is dependent on a pan membrane of some sort that must be properly fixed into the drain. Then all the wall membranes must lap over this to ensure proper drainage. There are ways around the latter, but you would still be taking a major chance of failure at the drain.
*Steve, Mike is right about the seal at the drain, but there is a way for you to make a durable, inexpensive repair. For a simple renovation, you can set tile over tile--although you don't say what the existing material is--using a Hydroment product called UltraSet. This material has the desirable qualities of gap bridging and waterproofing. It is a trowel-applied liquid membrane. Follow-up with a post for more info if this sounds like it will work for you.
