Hi,
Looking for opinions on how to proceed…..
I am repairing cracks in the horse hair plaster in one of my bedrooms. Usually in the process I gouge out the cracks down to solid plaster. After that I usually apply paint to the cracks prior to filling with joint compound and tapings. I was told or read that painting the cracks would stop the old plaster from sucking out all the moisture from the joint compound when it (the joint compound) is applied.
My question – is the painting step necessary?
Thanks, Joe

I don't know about necessary, but it's probably useful or beneficial.
Having lived with old plaster I'd even consider something like "Link" a masonry bonding agent. This is particularly true if the plaster is soft or shedding sand.
Is this the stuff you are referring to?

I'm pretty sure it's the product just a different brand. What we have in these parts is
Sta-Dri
Use link or white glue, not paint.
I use concrete bonding adhesive for this type of repair.
Good advice from all of you. I will check out Link and see what I can find. The room is a front to back bedroom, so it is the size of 2 bedrooms - seems like it is taking me forever and I just started! But it is probably taking me as long as 2 bedrooms would!!
Thanks again!
