What are the pros and cons of house wrap? our cottage is on lake huron just south of the 45 parallel. does it keep moisture out or just drafts?

Its Code here. Can't imagine building a house without it. There have been studies showing that building felt is as good, and perhaps better than housewrap. If it is a whole house project, then we use housewrap. If it is a remodel, then I use felt. It is just easier to install and store.

I don't believe tyvek or typar is a moisture barrier. Its just creates an envelope.....keeping drafts out. You wouldn't want a vapor barrier on the exterior of your house. You got one on the inside with kraft paper insulation or poly and latex paint. You'd lock in the moisture with a vapor barrier on the outside. I remember reading somewhere a few years back that 15lb felt wasn't a vapor barrier but 30lb was...so it was advised not to use 30lb as housewrap.
