I have a detached garage that I use for storage. The things in the garage including a car that I rarely use, a hauling trailer and even some of my tools are rusting at a much faster rate than one would expect. It is almost to the point that I hate to have anything of value in it.
I live in Wisconsin. It is a standard stick built garage that is uninsulated and it isn’t sheetrocked. The garage doors are almost always closed. It has only one window (usually closed). There are some ridge vents and a few open vents in the sloped roof. It is sheathed with plywood and covered with steel siding. It certainly isn’t sealed at all. It is on a concrete slab that is 5 years old. I taped a piece of plastic on the concrete for a couple days and there was no moisture under the plastic so it nust be dry.
It is a little cooler in the garage in the summer months because it is shaded. It does feel a little damper in the garage than it does outside but certainly not like a damp basement.
Should I try to actively ventilate the garage with some fans and leave the window open? Where would the fans be most effective? Any other ideas. I have never heard of this problem before. Thanks.
