as a licensed and insured general contractor who likes to work alone and do the smaller odd jobs, repairs and touch-ups
with 10 years of experience and a load of sharp tools.
my life is a mix of dry wall/plaster repair, skim coating, termite/rot repair, light painting, installing dryer vent, removing light fixtures, swapping faucets, replacing washers, scraping and caulking shower, trapping raccoons in attic or garage, set-up dad/home theatre, making cabinet doors, changing light bulbs
most of my customers are alder or have no clue. I get them customers from ad in local shoppers guide or word of mouth from my base. them are all most of the time repeat customers and are happy with me
I charge either by the hour for them’s with list of lots of little repairs at a rate of anywhere from 35-45 bucks per hour depending on the working conditions in the home(messy, dirty or smelly work gets the rates up) on the first visit, then I hold the rate to them
or I charge by the estimate on stuff like rooms that are to be repaired/painted, gutters repaired, rotten stuff to be repaired. this is where where I attempt to figure on 300 bucks a day for me.
work on high ladders, far away distance , crawl spaces, or apartment buildings I try to get more .
I feel that these are minimum figures, to get me motivated to first even get my ass over to the house and then to do what ever it takes to do an outstanding job that I am known for. any less and I am not doing the job. let them home owners get one of them no-tool owning, unlicensed/insured, sticky finger guys from in front of the paint store($120 cash day)
I do what I do and I do it good, keep my mouth shut and make homeowners happy, but i need 300 day comeing in at least
what do you all think is $300 day what i got into this business for or should i get more?
is 45 bucks an hour for a man like me too little for the handy man role where i may replace the hardware on a bi-fold door, repalce 2 light switches, hang 2 pictures, dowel up 2 door frames and re hanf the doors and 2 washers in the upstairs bath sink in 3 hours…would be $135 for me and 30 in supplies
too little???
paint a 12×15 room. repair all cracks and holes with a few coats of joint coupound sand to feather edge. scrape all loose paint, feather edge
spot prime as needed and 2 coats, ceiling, trim walls, excellent job would be $700
…too much?
thanks for the input, give me courage to charge more 😉
