how much to expect to pay for stump removal ??
We had to take down 7 large trees, 26″ diameter on average, to make room for new driveway. My excavation contractor is already on site with his large bucket excavator for other work. How much should I expect to pay for stump removal and disposal by the excavator? This is in a “fancy” North East town. large lot, so no problem moving around. I got quote a price which I think is crazy but what do I know. They need to be completely removed and taken away.

depends a lot how big his excavator is, stumps can be extremely hard to pull, I could work at one with 2 hours with my backhoe and not get it but with a 30 ton excavator it would pop out in 2 minutes.
I usually have my tree guy grind them and if he did seven trees for me (e.g.: he had already marshalled his equipment) it would be about $100 each, but if he did just one it would probably be $300 anyway... more for a bigger stump as they take longer...
In my area (expensive northeast town) there is a guy who will come and grind them well below grade for about $200 each, your area probably has someone like that ... google "stump grinder service"
I have always rented a stump grinder and done it myself. My muscles hate me the next day, but it's significantly cheaper.
Yes. Me too.
sounds to me like the excavator guy would rather not do the stumps. could have had a bad experience with one in the past.
The best way to deal with s situation like this is to ask for a "not to exceed price". The contractor quotes you the worst case scenario and then performs the work on Time and Materials not to exceed the quote. That way you take all of the risk and if all goes really well you get the benefit
