junk,
How much do we have invested? Or how much do we tell the IRS and the insurance company we have invested?

About 40K... hand tools, power tools, scaffolding and ladders, a few shop machines, etc.
David
Before I got to your post I was thinking 40k, think that sounds about right for me as well.

As an independent carpenter who is NOT a contractor, I would say about $8000 replacement cost for all my toys and means.
As a 22yr old independant carpenter not contractor (no truck included) about 6000.still growing.
I'm in the same neighborhood.
Welcome to the Taunton University of Knowledge FHB Campus at Breaktime. where ... Excellence is its own reward!
About $19k in the tools and another $8k in trailers
Vehicles: not counting DW's 3 year old Subaru, I could sell the my 91 Saab 900 turbo hatchback for $2000 maybe and my 89 Chevy 2500 with a hinged flatbed (no hydraulics, gone before I bought her) with 120k on the new odometer for maybe $1500
Car? what is that ?
Purchase price over the years, not including the 3 trucks, maybe $40-50K . Trucks add another 30k or so.
Selling price maybe 30%-50% of that in todays market (not including trucks).
Example: 4 worm drive saws, 3-7 1/4", one 8 1/2 rafter saw. Cost maybe
$550, sell all for maybe $225 on a real good day to a hungry buyer.
I am in for $70 - $80 K not including truck & computer stuff.
What is interesting is what it is worth?
Someone just posted 30-50% I think but I kind of doubt that. What I do have is the means to make a living & I like my toys...........

I toted it up one time for insurance purposes and i had about $30K in replacement costs about ten years ago. I inherited Ian's tools for a few thousand more...not sure what a bunch of Festool stuff wired for 220V goes for, though.
Shop tools and travel? I am insured for 75k. That value is for replacement, but I know I could never replace 1/2 of them. I have inherited about 1/2 of them, other half is great finds at estate sales or new.
"It is what it is."
I gotta guess i'm at about 15k. Just tools in the traditional sense, no truck or computer or anything like that.
Family.....They're always there when they need you.
Between the shop & trailers, around $100k
Sale price today- no where near that much
My case, way more than my cars
As our only "car" is a 300k retired business van...
Replacement tool cost around $175k for my old stuff. Bertha-type tractors are getting scarce here. I recently resisted temptation for a Case 580 hoe a client offered cheap.
In fact, am starting to trim my collection. Cat crawler's going to a new home once I locate the last piece I need in the tranny. Ideally, the 47,000 lb (gross) trailer goes with it. Both deuce-and-a-halfs stay. Unisaw doesn't, once the 12-14" is ready. How did I end up with 2 stationary jigsaws?
Lots of little stuff. Anybody want a free Wen wet stone sharpener? Pump don't work 'cause the vandals stole the handle... Or it sat on a shelf too long, essentially new. How about a good hydraulic-actuated trailer brake controller, good for up to 6 electric brakes? My trailer has 8.
PAHS works. Bury it.
Tom, still have the grinder?
Joe H
Wish that Case was here, I need an upgrade.
Wen's yours if you want it. Trickling water over the stone works. Either from the tap or a small pump. Coffee can hung from the ceiling? Whatever. Had a ridiculously tiny reservoir, which I don't seem to have kept. Sat on a shelf in LA before the heir got it. Sat on his shelf until he gave it to me, never been turned on. I've probably run it 15 minutes. I prefer free-handing drill bits on my dry grinder.
No trailer brake controller? Same price: freight, unless you're planning a road trip. I actually prefer the hydraulic operation to the new electronic ones.
If that Case hoe was an upgrade, I pity you. It was a worn-out CK (the original 580; a hoe stuck on an industrial tractor), engine was great, everything else pretty far gone. Had to rebuild one hoe cylinder just to get a buyer to take it. Then he called me when he got home and the hydraulics were jerky. Turned out he was already down 2 gallons of oil. Long drive, and maybe we didn't get it quite full. At my suggestion, he came to help me rebuild the cylinder. He'll get lots of practice.
I put a new bunjie on the gear shift (which didn't like to stay in gear) to keep him safer. Now I have a new friend who can get me free unlimited quanties of 4x8 EPS sheets with the coating slightly askew, varying thickness up to 6". He's working on me to drill him a well, while I'm working on him to buy my drilling rig.
Hey, maybe you should plan a road trip! I can get you some time on a 580D, running great after a complete engine tear-down 2 wks ago. It's a real nice tractor. Owner loves me. PAHS works. Bury it.
Tom, got one antique hoe, need a newer one.

I have the original Case hoe, just put a dozen new hoses on it. Needs the boom cyl rebuilt - bypassing the piston seals and drops slowly.
Local case dealer says they can get the piston seal but not the rest, or maybe not all the rest. $78 for just the one seal, which in the parts book looks to be just a stack of lip seals. No bearing house here so can't tear it down and try to match it up.
I don't have any good ideas right now, but it still works so it's on ignore until I can get to a bearing house. Runs good, put new tires on last summer so can't give up on it now.
I'll email address for toy grinder.
Joe H
Joe:
Try surpluscenter.com, you may be able to get a whole new cylinder that is close enough match that you can 'make fit'. Probably under $200.
Art, cyl is 4"OD by 48" pin to pin retracted with 1.75" shaft.
No idea what the wall thickness is.
Got my hoses from surpluscenter, thanks for the tip. Great prices.
I'll tear this down someday and take the seals with me when I go "the big city".

there is one machine shop (that i know of) in my area that does all the hyd repair work... that anyone with equipment goes to anyway... they will sell just the seals and keep a huge stock... they can also replace bent /broken rods, bush rodends ect... but they have a $50 min charge... which i didn't know until the parts to rebuild one cylinder cost me the same as the parts to rebuild 2... so now i ask... so i get enough to rebuild the non leaking ones while i'm fix'n the bad one... many times the parts i get look nothing like the parts i took out... sometimes i have to stack scrapers or spacers... but they always seem to work ... i just make the guy draw out and mark where each is supposed to go... takes longer to go get the parts than it does to rebuild a cylinder... i have a 3/4" drive dewalt electric impact thats about the only thing that will remove some of the nuts on the bottom of the rods.. but besides that very few tools needed...
sure wish i could run up on a huge assortment of all the seals, scrapers, o-rings ect... would be nice to have a small inventory seems i always break a scraper or blow a seal on a sat or sunday...
if i'm understanding what i'm rebuilding it's that square edge hard o-ring part thats doing the lions share of the work? and the rubber o-rings and seals just keep the grit out and prevent some seepage?
p
We used to rebuild our own cylinders, I think I still have a cylinder wrench around as a matter of fact. Like you say they are pretty basic. We also made our own O rings, and gaskets for that matter. You can buy O ring making kits, and gasket punches. Pretty handy when your in the wilds of Canada, or in your case Memphis on a Sunday afternoon.
I mean. Who's dumb enough to bugle an Elk in a zoo?
http://somafm.com/listen/
LOL dude i used a leather boot shoelace one sunday to replace that square edge hard o-ring... it had broken into small peices and would hold zero pressure... i had on new boots and the laces were all but square... wrapped it in the groove (ring land) several times... used a greased hose clamp as a "ring compressor" to get it back into the bore... that puppy held pressure for several weeks before it started leaking bad enough for me to make a real fix...
when you do so much with so little for so long... you can do about anything...with nothing...
it's ELVIS deathweek here and ur miss'n it dude.... but then so is he
p
Yea you can come up with some pretty clever fixes when you have too. We were always in danger of holding up trains when we broke down so it was fix it or cost the customer lots of money. That never goes over well in your yearly review. LOL
Elvis death week hmm. I'd like to sit on a balconey with a grill and a case of beer and watch that. Pretty good people watching right there.
It would be cool if one year he rose from his grave and came back. Wait I think the National Enquirer has already reported that.

LOL... hard to imagine it once looked like that.
This one's got 4 paint colors and a whole bunch of oddball repairs. Some I was responsible for. Figuring out oversized wheel lug bolts was tricky. But the wheels stayed on after that. Everything about this tractor says "hours, hours, hours".
New owner's thrilled. I think he's gonna try to get the kill function to work. Might even buy enough paint to get it all one color.
I've never visited a seal supplier. Been successful finding everything I needed over the phone. Though I requested my guy only buy Case 'cause they were pretty good about older machine parts. That swing cylinder kit was $44, a little high due to my needing 2 additional seals that for some reason weren't in the kit. That was the only cylinder that had a steady stream coming out.
Try getting seals for a 50's (I guess) Linkbelt crane that Linkbelt disavows all knowledge of. The company that made the cylinders went out of business 40 yrs ago. Turns out a good seal man can figure it out from dimensions you measure. Like most, the largest challenge was getting it apart. 8' cheater, with me jumping on it.
Awaiting from Florida a photo of a Cat gear spacer. What's in my crawler doesn't match the parts book. The only other book option doesn't look like what's left of what I have, which has no identifying number. Hoping whatever they have on the shelf there looks like my mangled piece. $130 plus freight, I want to make sure it's right. Otherwise, I have to try to get dimensions out of corporate Cat and sweet-talk my machinist.
Ain't old machinery wonderful? Got your email. PAHS works. Bury it.
I've found a number of Case seal suppliers on line, but nobody lists anything for this machine.
Lots of listings for 310 which is a contemporary, but no pictures of the parts books to look at.
I think what I need are just lip seals stacked, no rocket science stuff.
Need some brake discs too, what a Rube Goldberg gizmo those are. Iron castings with egg shaped holes machined in. Big ball brgs in the craters that force the castings apart as they rotate opposite. Works, sorta but friction discs are oil soaked & glazed. Needs axle seals and new friction material.
Joe H
Those brake discs sound like what the 580 CK had. I took one look, thought about rebuilding for 10 sec, and told the owner he needed to spend some money. I'm remembering something like $300 ea for new hardware. Rebuild kits were available.
Watch out for installing those seals if they go over a splined shaft. Real easy to tear the seal, which you won't know for awhile. Electrical tape or (better) shim stock between the seal and the shaft works. That's one job I'll be very happy to never re-do.
Bertha's got monster shoes, larger than my deuce-and-a-half's, in all four wheels! Brakes for mountain driving, love 'em. Air-assisted hydraulics. And a whole lot cheaper than those funky Case discs. Which did keep the new owner alive on his hour and a half ride home.
Lots of old hoes around without functioning brakes. No wonder.
PAHS works. Bury it.
So your the one posting the brake controller on craigs list. Another good reason for me to come out and visit you. One of these days all get my butt in gear and do it. I actually might be able to use the controller.
Live by the sword, die by the sword....choose your sword wisely.
Controller's still here, no response from craigslist (including you- VBG). Probably should have asked for some money, sometimes response is better than for free (once sold a pile of double-hungs I couldn't give away- LOL).
Got my money's worth a long time ago out of the controller, figured somebody could use it. Requires a fluid line to your brake system, usually the master cylinder. Anti-lock might not work. You already saw the photo, slightly rodent-chewed.
After I had a no-show on the Wen sharpener at ($25), JoeH wins. Keep this stuff moving. Received another load of glass last week if you need any.
Got your email, will get back to you. Want to make a few phone calls first about your truck. Unlikely here, 1 ton's a little light for me, but I might be able to find a new home. Good woodgas project.
Always Yuengling, or better, in the fridge. Wanna join a ferro-cement party in Sept? Interesting FSBO house opportunity out here, don't let me forget to tell you. More tomatoes than I'm picking, if that's of interest. PAHS works. Bury it.
junkhound,
Wood working tools, automotive tools, yard tools? I suppose $100 k + is what I've spent. Replacement cost several times that. Currant selling price? A tiny fraction..
(how many people would be in the market for fuel injection tuning tools for 57 to 63 corvettes?) Or magneto set up tools for vertex magneto's?
I know there is little market for my cam alignment equipment for old stlye Jaguars or my distributor machine etc..
My wood working equipment too has some pretty esoteric items as well. Most of the really bizarre stuff is for timber framing..
I got up to about $75K and I hadn't even tallied any power or hand tools.

Do i count trucks????
WOW.... since i have never purchased a tool new (never spent over $150 and got a new tool) and since i use to own a small chain of pawnshops... (think i got into th pawn business to add to my tool collection) what i have invested might be less than they are worth even in a fire sale... the closest i have gotten to new is a bobcat that had 470hrs on it (now 890hrs 4 yrs later) even my dumptruck with less than 50k on it i have less than 2k invested in... the garage i built at my parents house when i was 15 is still fully stocked with mechanic tools, compressors, partswashers, distributor machine, welder, saws drills ect... and i haven't lived there in 20yrs... home garage is the same as are each of my warehouses... every commmerical property i have has a stocked "tool room"...
so i'd say alot
