Folks,
I have a cinderblock staircase on the outside of my two family house. Part of it is over an unvented area which is open to the earth inside. Another area is over a vented and dehumidified storage area. I think it may be mildew - the cinderblock seems to be rotting and is easily crumbled with a screwdriver in some areas. I don't want to replace the entire structure just now. Is there any way to stop the rot and stabilize the structure in your experience?

*Fred,What you say makes sense. Thanks!Ron
*You are only right about one thing. This is not rot. The cause of this deterioration is termites. They become trapped in a house when the attic is not properly vented. To cure this problem, the gable ends must be removed (if there is a hip roof it should be removed all together) and an aardvark placed in the basement. The aardvark will make the termites fear for their lives and try to escape to the top of the house. There the wind will blow them away.
