We have a house that was built in 1950. There hasn’t been any new texturing done since the original. Just paint over old paint. You can see all of the touch up spots. We need to repair some cracks in the walls.
What would be the best way to get an even texture on our walls w/o plastering the whole thing?

1: spackle, sand, prime, hold light sideways to wall,
2: spackle again where needed, reprime,
3: make sure the whole thing is consistent. Repeat step 2 if necessary
4: paint 2 coats good paint
If only it was that easy.
You are fighting over 50 years of roller nap repairs and who knows what. I can think of a few approaches. Patch your cracks and paint as above while acknowledging that you have old walls and the new repairs will never completely match the old surfaces. The more you build up the new, the more you build up the existing.
2. Skim coat the entire area, then prime and paint
3. Repair and spray or roll a light texture over area, then prime and paint.
4 and above Continue to acknowledge that old walls have "character"
125. Tear out wall material and start over. see above
126. Move
Skimcaot the whole thing - see various threads on D-mix...& good luck!
Thanks Kate! I have just begun to read the D-mix threads. Looks like it might be the answer. Barry has some other good suggestions... but moving won't work due to the lovely real estate mkt. in San Diego. So..
I'll do the skimcoat of d-mix in the spare bedroom to start , hopefully I will get good enough to do the kitchen.
Good news is it can't be any worse than the "character" walls we now have!
