How to stick frame interior cathedral
Hi All,
I am working on the plan for my workshop. 24′ by 76′ and want to stick frame the gable roof. I have done owner builder with trusses on my house and stick framed my barn so I am familar. The goal is to have the roof 6/12 pitch with a 4/12 pitch on the inside ceiling. Roof scissor trusses can do this to the tune of $6000. I can stick frame the roof alrght, but how do I stick frame the interior ceiling? Do I just stick frame another roof with 4/12 pitch inside the exterior roof? I want the extra room in the ceiling for insulation. Northern Ca goes from 30 degrees in winter up to 105 in summer.
Any thoughts welcome.

That's pretty much right. But to be sure of handling the load, you probably need to have it engineered.

Marco,
Why can't you just stick frame it with 2x12's with a ridge and use collar ties set at whatever height you need structurally so that you don't need a structural ridge. If you don't like the collar ties than go with a structural ridge and no collar ties. To me it doesn't make sense to frame one roof with one pitch and then go back and frame another set of rafters at a lower pitch and spend the extra money and materials for the lower set of rafters.
Frame the main roof first and then go back and snap lines at the correct height and install one set of collar ties and your done.
If you stick frame you will need to provide some support for your ridge beam. Nothing practically spans 76'.
If your main goal is room for insulation why don't you spec raised heel trusses?

I'm with Joe, if you do not want the costs of trusses, then just use 2x12 and be done with it. Building an interior set up as described would be a PITA and like others have said you'll get into the structural ridge problem. The 2x12 frame would get you a R38. If you want a better insulation than that then you could spend some extra money and go with spray in foam like icynene or the higher R value of a closed cell foam, the closed cell will get you R 7 per inch.
HI All,
thanks for the information. If I use the collar ties across the 2x12 rafters, would I nail the interior ceiling drywall to the collar ties?
Yes.
