FHB # 92 Jan '95 "Choosing Roofing" mentions Celadon 800-235-7528 a molded clay look a like; Cembrit 905-564-3110 a fiber cement look a like.
I think I saw a fibreglass slate look a like years ago but don't recall manufacturer. Try a web search on roofing.
*Lee, there's also a "rubber" molded slate look-alike. Can't find the manufacturer right now, but e-mail me if you're interested, and I'll locate the source.Steve
*I was looking for a cedar shake substitute which I found but couldn't get. If you're out west, Owens Corning is selling a fiberglass/clay/mineral composit slate look-alike called MiraVista. Call them at 800-GET-PINK for info. The stuff sounds and looks great but I think it's in the test market phase and they wouldn't even send me literature because I'm not in the test area. Good luck.Jim F

Leejjj,
I am looking for the same thing. I obtained a sample of the Celadon tiles DScott mentions, but they are large (10 7/8" x 16") and thick (approx 3/4")
they would probably look ok from a distance but up close seem too "chunky" for my application on a cape cod style addition. I'm still looking for alternatives, and I'll let you know if I find anythig suitable.

Try Certainteed's Carriage House and Grand Manor series-they are very good imitations, and recheap compared to slate, expensive compared to standard shingles.($110-135 per square if I remember correctly)

check out authentic-roof.com
*I found a product called Authentic Roof, made by Crowe Building Products Ltd., online. Their website is http://www.authentic-roof.com. The material is supposed to look like slate, be lightweight with a 50 year warranty. The roofing tiles are made from recycled materials. I hope this helps. ES Fisher
*leejjj,Just had some guys in town do one of the local church steeples in a slate look-a-like. Stuffs made outrecycled tires and plastic. Comes in a bunch of colors and the crew said it was easy to work with. Sorry I only havea phone # MAJESTIC SKYLINES at 800-572-7672.Good luckBones

try this website
http://www.eterniteverest.com/
its a cement slate that is real easy to work with a lot cheaper than the real stuff done a few projects with it seems to weather really well and you can even replace real slate with these and its hard to tell
good luck
*Article on "Authentic Roof" in This AOld House Journal : seems Tom Sylva (sic) is roofing his house that burned down using the rubber slates. I talked to their rep and he says a big chain in Mass. is carrying them and they're looking for distributers in other states. I really like the new Certainteed "Hatteras" 18" x 36" with (4) 9 " tabs and 8" exposure , really looks great and closest I've seen to the genuine article. Rated for 110 mph, 10 year Algae resistance, 40 year warranty. Duh , is this roof hard to sell ?

Try Hardie Slate (Jim Hardie Co.) Looks good, not great. Has a nice color blend for a "stand alone" roof. Do not butt to the real thing, you'll see the difference.
