Just bought my dad a Mak 12V impact driver for x-mas. Used one at a home cheapo display and I was hooked. Will have to “borrow,” it on occasion of course.
Having never really used one before – do you have to get special bits for them? Do they chew up bits much faster? Anybody recommend a good brand of bits that are a bit tougher?
Thanks
Ben

IMHO, it is best to use square or posi-drive screws with an impact driver.
A much better design anyways, and the bits will last a long time.
The regular phillips bits will shear off much more quickly under the stress.
I like the ceramic-coated Deckmaster screws with posi-drive heads for general purpose use. Much stronger than drywall screws. They rarely break, even if you use metal washers under the heads
A toilet wax ring makes for a great screw thread lube. Just the right consistency. Less strain, and batteries will last longer.
For my impact driver, I've only had success with Lee Valley hardened bits <http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.asp?SID=&ccurrency=1&page=32282&category=1,43411,43417>
Try them, you'll like them.

If you have a Snap on truck local there bits are waranteed forever. Atleast thats what my rep told me. Buy a dozen for 2.50ea and they just keep replacing them. I've spent that much on throw away bit in a years time anyway.
