In expensive corded trim saw

| Posted in Tools for Home Building on December 22, 2004 05:49am

I maybe in need of a inexpensive corded trim saw. I have a cheap cordless that may not make it through the next set of cuts I need it for. But ounce this 8′ of cutting is finished it may never get used again. So I would prefer to stay away from the $200 saws out there. Anyone have any suggestions. A cheap import for this one time job would work great.

    Did you check Harbor Freight?

Checked there web site and they only had 4" tile saws in that style and there arbors would not fit wood blades of that diameter.

    Hey PD,

Trim saws are kind of a specialty saw and therefore aren't usually too cheap. You could check the want ads or Harbor freight, but on the other hand if you spent  more money and actually got a better saw you might find that you would use it more than you think. I know I did.

I have a five and a half inch craftsman which is actually a skill tool and I like it alot. It is a little under powered for ripping though. I also have a Porter Cable sawboss this is the saw I reach for 99% of the time I love this saw and I got it for 118.00 dollars at Sam's club it really is a top notch peice of equipment.

In corded, Porter Cable has the only ones I know of, their "Saw Boss" with 6" blade left, and their worm drive trimsaw with 4-1/2" blade.

You can get a new Saw Boss for $129, or go on eBay and pay about half for a used one.

The 4-1/2-incher with worm drive, however, is expensive.  Even on eBay they are bidding up the used ones to $150 and more.

Why exactly do you need one for "just this one last job," when there are so many other options.  Handsaw, for example.

I need to cut out the exterior trim casing on a old double hung window.
The house is stucco and this outer trim part of the casing has a lip that extends under the stucco. If you try and pry the trim off you tear up the stucco which I would like to avoid. If you cut along the stucco the old trim comes off and you don't disturb the the stucco. There is limited room to put a ladder and maneuver a 7 1/4" saw. The trim saw worked great until it died, It was a 30 year old craftsman that was a discontinued model when it was bought.
I am open to any other suggestions for getting this trim off.

I think at Home Depot, maybe Lowes or both, in the ceramic tile dept thay have a 4" left blade saw for about $100.  It comes with a cheapie diamond blade that should cut the stucco real well.  You can also buy a carbide tipped wood blade in the tool dept.

I'm sorry, I thought you wanted it done the right way.

If it's only a one time use, rent one.
