Hello all, I am new to this forum and am looking for a little direction. I recently completed a sunburst design around my fireplace using birdseye, curly birch and fleck maple finished with a satin danish oil…I was plannig on using eyeball lights from the ceiling but now realize that the reflection from the bulb is unacceptable…the wall is 14′ long with an 8′ ceiling…any suggestions would be appreciated – Kevin

Is there any way to incorporate rope or other lite source in the mantle if there is one, or along the inside edge of the design/fireplace juncture to cast the lite up from the bottom. Might keep that sunrise theme if you can hide it. Why don't you try to post a pic of the design for others to brainstorm on. Best of luck.
You might also be able to hang some directional low voltage spots down low enough that they won't cast a glare. They're small, so you could almost lower them down to just out of the way and direct them straight at the design. Maybe.

Have you looked into ALL the types of eyeballs, reflectors, filters, wallwash styles, different wattages, etc. ????????
It's a big world out there and there are hundreds of options and combinations. Some retailers hold themselves out to be experts in lighting design without knowing more than the profit on a certain fixture. Look around and you'll see more.
Now that I've told you all I know about lighting, I'm subscribing to this thread so I can learn more.
I wired a mantle that might fit the bill. It was a conventional wood mantle from the front. Maple I think. It was made hollow with a removable piece of glass about 4'long and 4"wide set flush with the top. He chose a daylight fluorescent to be placed in the cavity. I roughed in a switch of to the side of the mantle and stubbed out a length of romex near the end of the space where the mantle would be mounted. I mounted the fixture toward the front of the mantle so that the light projected toward the wall and not straight up toward the ceiling. I had my doubts but the effect was quite striking when he mounted a painting on the wall and set a pair of antique candlesticks and vases at the ends of the mantle.
I probably would have gone with halogen lamps and a dimmer for a whiter light and more control but as it was it looked good. You could use light rope or any number of products and the mantle could be just about any material. Anything that can be built hollow that is. Just my 2 cents.
