I recently had my gutters replaced and aluminum was installed to cover the fascia board. I was surprised to find the aluminum covering the fascia board was tucked behind the gutter and did not extend up to the drip edge of the roof. The installer says this is correct and that moisture would accumulate behind the aluminum fascia panel if was run up behind the drip edge. It seems to me I have more risk that water from ice damming will find its way behind the the aluminum fascia cover. Which is correct?

the aluminum to cover the fascia is supposed to cover the fascia... now anything that gets behind the gutter will go behind the alum. and never dry out... it should extend to the top of the fascia and definitely be behind the drip edge

He musta been short on stock. There is no reason not to have aluminum fascia tuck behind drip edge.

I've done more aluminum siding in my illustrious 27 years in the biz then I like to admit. almost every job I "redid" with vinyl or cedar I saw the same thing you have going on. The tin guys just simply find it easier to bend coil short of the drip edge cause most folks don't ever go up there and look. If I were you I'd slip some coil "over" the facia that that duche bucket put in and under the drip edge. Better yet....get him to do it like he should have.
Be well

I've also seen it done many times where the fascia wrap just barely extends upward past the bottom of the gutter. I've gotten a lot of fascia replacement jobs from this detail.
