We are having a new house being built and we will like to have Firesalte 2
kitchen countertops.
The builder kitchen contractor will not do the installation as he will
do only Corian or Granite coutertops(at a much higher cost than Fireslate)
Does anyone has installed Fireslate 2 and can we install ourself when the
cabinets and island are done or do we need a profesional.
We live in the north suburb of New York City.
Thank you.

I'm far from any kind of expert on this topic, however just helped a guy set fireslate kitchen counter tops the other day - the stuff is heavy!
Didn't seem any different than setting granite or solid surface, but the one thing I didn't like about the install was the way the seams came out between 2 adjoining pieces on an 'L' shaped section. It seemed like a great product for the price - if that's the look you are after. Seemed a bit rustic to me. I think the plan was to put a coat of toung-oil (sp?) to "slicken" up the appearence a bit. Sounds like a maintenance item to me.
I'll go back and check out how the whole thing came out and give you an update.
*Antoine--My husband and I installed Fire slate surfacing in our kitchen, without any real problems. We received lots of telephone support from the manufacturer; but the material was surprisingly easy to cut and sand and drill to achieve the fit we wanted. We had a straight shot counter, about 12' long, with a narrow bar counter behind. For the backsplash we used 1/4" x4x4 Fire slate tiles which were adhered with the same special silicone caulk we used for the main counter. We mounted an under mount sink before installation. This was about 3 years ago and we have had absolutely no problem. Good luck.
*Antoine,I just installed about 30' of it for a client in a custom kitchen we're doing. Like you he bought it based on the price. I can tell you that the price gets alot higher per square foot once you get done paying me to install it.It was not difficult to install however..... I do have some issues with fireslate's ideas about "square". I found that their cuts were seriously off. By serious I mean 1/8" across a 2' slab. When you join 2 pieces that are each 1/8" off square you get a joint that's open 1/4"! Yikes!!!One funny thing that happened to us: I followed the directions assiduously, including buying Sika Caulk for the undermount sink. I had trouble with the caulk tube momentarily so I called Fireslate Tech support. The guy on the phone suggested I just use silicone "that's what we do".... Ha, ha, ha.Jon Thompson
