Installed peel and stick flat roofing

cargin | Posted in General Discussion on October 20, 2007 05:20am

I installed peel and stick flat roofing membrane yesterday for the 1st time.

Bid a roof with a flat portion 288 SF. Flat part was selvage edge, in real bad condition. Showed HO pictures.

Siding on one side, shingles drop on to it from another edge.

One hole in the roof 2′ x 2′. Many soft spots.

Lady is 85. She calls back a couple weeks later and says she doesn’t want to do the whole roof, but can I patch the flat roof.

Because we have done other work for her before, I said sure even though I knew it was impossible.

Tear it off, replace 1/2 of deck with new plywood. Tell HO the situation.

Lumberyard is low on Selvage edge and it’s alittle too cold for working with tar.

Roofing company is real low on PVC membrane. Strike out again.

So I called Menards and they have this Protecto Roof. I have used Protecto wrap and I liked it for repairs.

Laid out a strip, peeled back the 1st 2 ft, with the paper pulled back underneath.

One guy kept tension on the roll to keep it lined up, one guy slowly pulled the paper and the 3rd rolled back and forth with a 100 lb linoleum roller.

In 2 hours we had the whole thing installed. even though it was in the low 50’s it stuck really good.

We let it hang over the drip edge by 2″ and then just wrapped it around.

On Monday we will have to go back and do some detail work.

I don’t know how it will weather, but for installation I would use it again in a heartbeat. It was easy to work with and boy did it stick.

I'm going to bump my own thread.

Anybody else have any experience with Protecto Roof?

    How does it weather?

    Thanks for the input.

I can't even find any mention whatsoever of the product on the web.  Sounds like something I would like to try on my shed.

It's underlay, 6 months exposed lifespan.  So I expect you will be covering it again with selvege?

Looks promising.  I have a small shed with a low slope "shed roof" that I expanded a bit.  I don't want to use the cheap roll roofing again, in 5 years it's pretty well shot...

What we used was the Protecto roof 45. White faced.

      10 year warranty.

      Like any warranty I suppose.

This was like a 36" wide roll of flashing tape, with a polyethlene (plastic) finish coat.

Do you know approximately how much that costs?

        1. cargin | Oct 21, 2007 05:01pm | #8

          $90 for a 36" x 33.3' roll.

          32" overlap.

          Bought 4 boxes for a 288SF roof.

          1/3 of roll left over.

          No accessories.
