Installing cedar shake roof:
We like cedar shingles and shake roofs. We live in the midwest with all types of weather. Old shingles years ago were installed over 1 x 4 and 1 x 6 sheathing with room for the shingles to dry out. Applying them over solid sheeting with felt paper no doubt shortens thier life.
We have some old buildings that have cedar shingles that lasted over 60 years and some newer ones on solid sheeting that have been on less than 1/2 that with appreciably more deterioration.
There are products such as Cedar Breather that keeps the shingle up off the felt paper to let air under the shingles, but is priced at $130 a square! One half inch shingles can be bought for less than that. What would be the effect if we were to run one course of wood lath under each row a of shingles? This too would hold them up off the roof letting them to dry out. Might be detrimental to the shingles when walked on without full support under the entire length of the shingle.

2 things:
first.. $130 a square is way off.. Cedar Breather is nowhere's near that... check your figures again
second.. if you install lath every 5.5 " over the plywood deck, you will not get the same air flow up the roof as you wil with either skip sheathing or Cedar Breather.. you will have an effective dam every 5.5", instead of continuous flow
stick to the skip sheathing or the Cedar Breather
but hey, whadda i no ?

Cedar Breather or skip sheating hands down orrrrrrrr use cedar shingles that are zinc treated. Theyre more money but besides not needing the CB or skip sheathing they also ward off mold.
