Different strokes for different folks.
I'm sure that he used a sharpie to mark the walls cuz he knew that there would be a tile backsplash.
Ganging the uppers into a single straight unit works well, cuz then the faces are are all one plane and shims can be added to fill gaps where the screws are run into the studs.

I agree - ganging together is a great way and I use it for small sections (up to 4 isolated cabinets)- just impractical in many cases - long runs especially. Sometimes walls are so off or have bulges that I have to adjust the "straightness" of a cabinet run or it will be off the next wall by over a full inch!
putting shims in the gaps is easy at the bottom but over half of my installs place the cabinets at the ceiling and then the shims behind middle cabinets or against walls at the top have to be placed on the wall before cabinet installation. I have tried this but am not sure yet if in houses with really wavy and out of plumb walls if it is faster.
I think you are right about the backsplash tile - it must me - he seems to care about doing a good job - witness the back screwed crown. How does he get a knife edge joint. Doesn't the board shift a bit during cinching down the screw?Chileab
