Installing New vinyl window

cwent7 | Posted in General Discussion on July 14, 2012 10:25am

I installed a new construction window with nail flange on top of my T1-11 plywood siding today.  I was talked into doing it this way by a family member.  Is this completely wrong or just not the normal way of doing it?  I had planned to cut the siding and attach to the sheathing.  Do I need to redo this?

Mine are up against the sheathing.

Are you sure you have sheathing, under the T1-11?  Are you planning to trim the window somehow?

      I believe so

It looks like there is another layer of T1-11 underneath but running diagonal.  One reason we did it this way is that those boards were not cut very straight and pieces were an inch or so from the edge of the stud.   Also they seemed a bit brittle and we thought they might break.

        Forgot to answer that part...

You're correct. The window should be under the T1-11 and the flanges taped to the sheathing. Any window mounted on top of T1-11 is going to leak at the top, 100 % of the time. You need to remove the sheet or sheets of T1-11 around the window, set the window then trim the siding so it fits snug against the window.

Interesting detail. Unfortunately I didn't do that. Is it to stop air infiltration?

One thing I didn't mention is that I have a 2 foot overhang all the way around the house so I should not need to worry about leaking. I ended up keeping it this way for 2 reasons since the leaking should not be an issue.

    1. Making the trim inset into the siding may look strange and it is a lot to caulk.

    2. If I ever side the house I can go right over the T1-11 and I won't have to touch the trim.

How tall is the house? I've got two foot overhangs too, but stil find water all around the lower floor windows after a storm with lots of wind.

Having the eaves overhang, just made your job easier.  Just caulk a lot before installing the trim around the windows

      you're kidding, right?

I do realize caulking can fail over time but there are quite a few barriers that need to be overcome before water would ever get in.  Do you have a suggestion?  I think the trim would look bad if I put the flange under the siding.

Before you install the trim, cover the flange with peel-and-stick rubber flashing.

I did plan on that. Thank you for all the help.
