Intersecting wall channel/backer.
Must there be a channel/backer for one wall to intersect with another? Can the intersection of the walls only be at the top plate and sole plate? Reason I ask is mama wants pocket doors for the closets in the new addition, but, the pocket door frame extends far enough that it would require that no channel or backer be there for the intersecting wall to tie into. Only the top and bottom plates can tie in if I use the pocket door frame.

Yes.
not a problem, the pocket door frame leaves plenty to attach the drywall to. Are you going to need a header above the pocket door, if so where will the king and trimmers be- inside the interesection ?
Hello Kp. Yes to the header but no to the trimmer and king, they will be past the intersection. So intersecting walls don't always need to have a channel and backer to tie in to?
No, You can build without the backer.
In your case the pocket door frame will work. Hang rock on the door frame first then butt the partition rock to the rock on the door frame.
They can't get your Goat if you don't tell them where it is hidden.
Thanks Dt, so just tie the top and bottom plates at the intersection?
Just the top plate. The bottom plate will stop at the door frame. I have seen them done with the frame drywalled before the intersecting wall is put in place and then the only tie between the frame wall and partition is a couple of toe nails at the header and glue applied to the last stud of the partition and screws of the correct length used to fasten the last stud to the backers in the door frame.
Not all that uncommon to see it done that way here. Edit : hit post before I finished.
