I’m in the process of planning a new deck for our house.
Wanting low maintenance I had been planning on decking with Ipe but the keeper of the budget is getting worried so I’m looking for an alternative wood. Alaskan yellow cedar was suggested to me by a friend as a long lasting deck material.
I want the wood to weather to grey and stay that way for about the next 30 years. : )
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Alaskan yellow ceder ain't cheap, is more trouble than its price and believe it or not it may not last 30 years in the northwest. I live in southeast alaska and had to remove my yellow ceder deck after about 18 years because it was starting to rot. I rebuilt the deck and used treated wood and I know that it will last a easy 30 years with the necessary upkeep done annualy. That deck has been on now for about 8 years and looks as good as it did when I put it on.
An adventure is an unplanned journey!
Red cedar weathers better than Alaskan yellow cedar in the Northwest.
Ironwood (IPE) would outlast both, but also costs more for the product and installation.
