I finally plan to install an island range hood. I’ve seen several “BEST” articles but nothing from anyone who actually has experience installing them and is familiar with how they actually operate. Here are the most common names: AKDY, ZLINE, and HAUSLANE. It will vent outside, and there’s a 12 ft cathedral sloped ceiling. I’m tending towards a 1,000 cfm plus because I’ve read the vent pipe is larger and running at a lower and more typical speed is more efficient venting. For make-up air Fantech looks easy to install. I’d appreciate any comments on installation, hood brands and Fantech make-up systems.
I’m thinking of a larger fan cfm because running a basic 400 cfm fan at maximum is louder than a 1000 cfm fan running a low power and moves more air. Fantech makes four make-up air systems from 750 to 2000 cfm that can include a heater.
My question is finding a quality, long lasting fan. There are many “BEST” websites but I can’t find any real user evaluations. Nothing like the tool tests and recommendations in FHB.

What is your question? I am building dropped kitchen ceiling right now to install an island vent. If you download the various install instructions you will see there is a rectangular top plate that needs to screw into ceiling lumber. Then there are 90 steel angles that install downwards to make the chimney. you then install the ducting and electrical and then the stainless cover around it. Careful with your choice of CFM. The rated CFM is at a particular back pressure that is determined by the duct size and air velocity. Just as an example an 8 inch duct is 4x4x3.14/144= 0.35 sqft. In order to get 1000cfm thru 0.35 sqft the air needs to flow at 1000/0.35 =2857 feet per minute.. This may be too fast.. Do refer to the installation instructions they should give you duct size and max length. The next thing to worry about is at 1000cfm, you have to bring that amount of air into your house at the same time.. Is your house capable of that? Where will the air come thru?
