jigsaw for fiber-cement siding?

royboy | Posted in General Discussion on September 18, 2006 03:37am

I’m about to have my first encounter with fiber-cement siding on a porch addition. The situation has the added complexity of having the siding butting into log walls on the house. Is it feasible to make the scribe cuts in the siding with a jigsaw? And if so, does anyone have any particular blade to recommend? Is the dust likely to kill my jigsaw?

There is a blade for ceramic tile that may work well and a regular blade will work for a while but dust will be an issue so set up an air hose or fan to keep dust away from saw and self.

I think that I'd try a pair of tile nippers on a piece of scrap.

No dust ,just some small scrap pieces to be chucked.

check out the sheers they have. They are like electric scissors on a drill housing and produce no dust. Best thing to use for your application IMO

Try an angle ginder with a wheel for masonry.

Like others have mentioned a grit impregnated blade such as used for tile would work to cut it.  I'd test it out first and see if it left a rough edge or not.

The shears may work depending on how jagged the line would be.

I'd do it with a diamond wheel in a grinder.  It will be dusty but I think it will leave you the best cut with the most amount of control and speed.

Yes, there is a blade for such a thing. It's used for ceramic tile and works fine on fiber cement board. Get the fiber cement shears if you can.

thanks, guys for all the suggestions. I've ordered some hitachi fibercement blades for my jigsaw and hope that will get me through the job. also relying on the article in FHB #140 for guidance.

do you have a link to those blades for a jig saw?

Never seen them before, at least not designated as for Hardi

The FC shears I've used all cause delamination at sharp corners and they are hell to maneuver around curves. The Remington carbide grit jigsaw blades do a better job on curved and intricate cuts. They do wear out, so plan on running through one a day. For holes, nothing beats a carbide hole saw.
