I have 2×8 joists for an inside ceiling – attic above. I am using simpson joist hangers. The 2×6 joist hangers seem to say usable for either 2×6 or 2×8. The 2×8 joist hangers say 2×8 or 2×10. Should I just go with the 2×6 joist hanger?
The simpson joist hangers have double shear strength which allows nails to cross in the middle – when is this feature desired or needed?
The hanger nails at my lumber yard say 10 on the head for the standard nails and 16 on the head for the sheer nails. The box that has the 10 nails seems to have two similar nails, one marked with 10 on the head and another non-marked. I asked the yard about this and they said they all come from the same box but inspecting the nails shows the 10 nails to be a 1/8 longer, should I go to the trouble to sort through and use only the nails marked 10? The box of galvanized hanger nails all seem to be marked with a 10 on the head.

For that application, which is a fairly light load, I wouldn't bother sorting them out,
either nail should be fine. The 2x6 hangers should be fine also.
So this implies that if the load were going to be heavy you would sort them out?My joists are already in and I did sort through the nails I am just wondering if others would have. I should have just grabbed the galvanized not that much more expensive and no need to sort. This likely won't be the last time I am rolling joists so I am hoping for some general best practices. Any idea on the double shear strength?
My experience with hanger nails is slim, we used gav. 12d's, but, if I was faced with a choice, I would use the marked ones.
No, then I would have asked the yard to sort them out in order to give me whatever size it was i needed. All I meant was why worry about it in your situation
use the marked ones if getting inspected.
The cross in middle is Simpsons newer LUS hanger style. uses fewer nailes and is easier nailing, and wood does not get 'nail poor' from so many tecos and 16 toenails all gathered round.
The 2x6 size is fine

When you look at the Simpson Catalog for joist hangers, they list the hanger for each situation in order of cheapest/ easiest to install to heavier duty/ most expensive. In your case, use the first hanger listed for your size joist - the cheapest. In the Fastener columns, it tells you what the min and max nail schedule you can use - header and joist. It is important that you follow those.
