I have installed kitchen cabinets & I want to install a 2 piece molding.. First a flat furniture piece then a 3″ crown. I need advice on installing a backer piece on the cabinet. Also, what do I do with that small edge sticking out on the upper cabinet where I make the outside turn.

There are several ways to do this. The flat molding can stack on top of the cabinet and project out past the faceframe a bit, or it can lap over the faceframe (unless you have full-overlay doors). I the first case, I put a 1x2" nailer back 1/4-3/8" from the faceframe. In the second case, the nailer is flush with the faceframe.

I usually notch for moldings with a pull-saw and a sharp chisel (unless the molding is so small that it looks like it was swallowed by the notch).
Here is a pic of a more eloborate version of what you are doing...I hope you can see how the vertical molding is seated into the notch.
