I have a customer who wants me to re-do a countertop by installing the new laminate over top of the old laminate. I’m thinking this is not a great idea, but am wondering if it has been done successfully by any of you. It has a square edge which we would be re-facing with a new piece of oak, so the edge isn’t a problem. I’m just leary of the cement bonding properly.

Hello Cam
Yes it can work, but it's not a good idea if you can do it the right way. I make about 15-20 tops a week and have not done what you described since feb. of 1997!!!
Rough up the exsisting lam with a belt sander, 60 grit is fine. Clean it with acetone. Everything else is done the same way. You'll probably want two coats of contact cement and use a J-roller to press hard for good contact. It can last for a long, long time or you could have problems depending on the environment it is done in (humidity, etc...). I would remove the top if I could and make a new one. Don't give a warranty on it. Be honest with the homeowner. Good luck and let me know if you have anymore questions.

Thanks for the info. Should I avoid the waterbased contact cement, or does it matter?
I agree with CT guy in the process of it all --I have pulled off the same manuever. And had sucess.I don't think that it matters what adhesive you use as long as it is contact type. The tooth of the old laminate with the 60 grit is plenty.Don't skimp on the adhesive and don't rush it ( let it set up like it needs to )On tip I can give you is to lay out some slats --like from a old blind --and get it exactly where you want it and work from the center out while you roll it . hope this help. Good luck MikeP.S. CB 750
Thanks for the help Mike. I watched my Dad blow his top once when a piece of laminate stuck in the wrong spot and it was not a pretty sight. He could have used your tip. What year is your CB750?

I got this old blind like 5 years or so ago and I have gotten more use out of that piece of junk. Funny what we save and re-use.'73 --What about your 900?
Hi Mike,
A '73 cb750 is a real classic, and worth a few bucks in restored condition. My 900 is a 1980, which is the first year for that model. It is a beaut. Pretty advanced for it's day. It has the dual range tranny, effectively making it a 10 speed, and air shocks, shaft drive. My hobby is restoring old bikes. I'm looking at a '68 cl77 scrambler right now. A real basket case but everything is there so it's a good candidate for restoring. Hang on to that 750.

Cam--Fill out your profile so I know where you are at. Or send me a e-mail.My 73 is Root beer brown with all the original stuff including the 4 to 4 pipes--I love to see your bike, and if you have any info on suppliers of 750 stuff,I.m thinking of changing out the points and coil with more modern and reliable stuff, I would keep the old parts which still work and those kinda change out would just make it more rideable without changing the apperance. Thanks MIke
