I will be needing to install some fairly significant swales and drains on a piece of property to take care of run-off water during heavy rains. Our local builder supply stores don’t seem to have much either in the way of materials of information about what works best and when. I need to do this right the first time. Where can I find more information and where can I find sources for large water volume materials since I’m not a commercial contractor?

I assume that you're refering to galvanized pipe, which is commonly known as "tinhorn." You can find it in round, oval, and rectangular X-section. It needs a substantial backfill and compacted fill to carry the same weight as reinforced concrete pipe. Don't know where you are, but here in Texas, you can find it at most contractors supply vendors and concrete suppliers.
third time I've posted the NDS site info so I have to make a disclaimer: I don't work for them!
NDS has a couple of nice documents and an online calculator for drainage calcs, you can find it here:

Thanks! This is a great resource. Should provide me with a better understanding of what I need to do.
Great - glad it's helpful. I get so much off this board it's nice to be able to return the favor.best,
