DW wants a lawn sprinkler system, sick and tired of lugging the sprinkler around.
House has about 2500 sq.ft. of yard, 1/2 lawn and 1/2 planting.
Lawn sprinkler system sucks, right? Have to drain system in the Fall, sprinkler heads get cut off by the lawn mower, have to reset head after the winter, shut off valves last about three years… those are the beefs I heard.
What’s your personal experience? If you can convince me that it’s a good idea, please give recommendations. Thanks
Tom

In SoCal. auto mated systems are a necessity. But we don't have frost/thaw problems either. Bury the heads to the right depth and use a taller pop-up head usually corrects the lawn mower decapitation problem

I remember seeing them along the highways. Why is it a necessity? Is it because of the frequency? We only have to do it once a week on average.

I did a few (one was a 15K job for a Wal-Mart where the old system was only 1 year old but didn't work right)
Here is the trick... if you do it yourself HIRE a professional to design the system. Don't use the services of Home Depot, etc. Go where the pros go to buy their stuff. Then pay them to design your system and install it exactly like they designed it. Ask them about the best way to winterize in you area, etc.
Good luck.
Be sure to get a utility locate done before you drop that Ditch Witch boom.
Thanks for the advice. We had a pro designed a system for our previous house but never got to have it installed before we moved on. That's the only way I would go if I were to pull this thing off this time.

Don't get a timer.
Sure as hell I'll be carrying as much as I can to work on the back of that house and they'll all come on in unison. I hate when that happens. Damn water minefield.
