I’ve recently learned of the JLC live event in March in Prov. Its only a couple blocks from home so I’m thinking about going. I won’t even need to park! I’m a diy and its probably not worth missing a day of work and the not insubstatial registration cost.
Hiring a good contractor/plumber/etc. is difficult, and I was thinking a JLC event could be a good way to meet top trade people that are local to me. That could make the event worth the cost.
Does the JLC event have any sort of job board, classified anything?
On the cheapskate end I could just walk through some of the parking garages writing down info from the logo’s on all the trucks.

Thanks for the feedback bobl. That's why i wasn't really planning on going. I just started wondering if it may have been a way to find some of the better local contractors. Anything is better than the yellow pages.

Go to your local pro lumberyard and ask the most important looking guy behind the counter for reccomendations. Those counter guys know everybody worth knowing. You do understand that the type of contractor that takes off a day(s) from swinging a hammer to get educated will probably cost more than some hack who thinks This Old House Magazine is a trade journal, right?

Yup, that's one of the better options, and I know just the guy. I think I've just read too many horror stories on breaktime. It seems that the GC's have a devil of a time getting good work out of their subs. Hard to imagine doing any better.

Of course. I am more than happy to pay for quality work done once. I would rather have trouble finding the $ than finding the quality.
Actually I'll probably have trouble finding either one!

I like the wayu you think, alas I live and work too far from you.Go to the show, you might get lucky and hook up, but even if not, you will get quite an education on materials etc. Just don't believe everything the salesmen tell you!I might be stopping in quickly there. I'll be on my way to a weddding in Montanna the following week. I might be able to talk the DW into letting me have a few hours there.

Thanks for the reminder, Mike! That might be the incentive Carole needs to let me have a few hours at the show.

Splat, email Mike Smith. He's damn good and local just to your south.
If you like tools and new material, go to the show. Admission is free to readers of JLC.
If you want to learn how to do certain things, check out the floor seminars.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.
Remodeling Contractor just outside the Glass City.

Calvin and others, thanks for the second wind. Maybe I will go. Especially if I got mixed up on the cost. I was thinking it was like $100.
>If you like tools and new material, go to the show.
A dangerous proposition. I'm too green, impressionistic, and enticed by the false promise of new tools overcoming my slowly improving skills. That said I sure like a shiney new tool.

Splat-
You'll probably find that the majority of the contractors there aren't local to you- they come from all around the country. At the last show, there was a job posting board (and a business card design contest board), but neither is really what you're looking for.
Personally, I'd pursue other routes to find contractors.
Bob
Bob,
>You'll probably find that the majority of the contractors there aren't local to you
Sure, I'm not interested in an army of contractors, just looking for a couple of the better ones. I'm sure there are a couple local contractors going. I figure anyone going to this sort of JLC event is interested in improving their skills in terms of efficiently doing a good job, the kind of contractor I'm looking for. I figured that would be much more efficient than slugging through the yellowpages or word of mouth.
Oh well, sounds like this isn't the route to go. Thanks for the feedback.
Eric
splat , it's a great show, and there are lot's of local contractors there..
if you register early enough, the general admission is free
we'll be there all day friday... and there are local heros like mike guertin & rick arnold giving seminars on the floor
