I recognize that the phrase is probably redundant, but we have a leaky skylight.
It’s a curb-type skylight, about 15 years old, which has just recently started leaking slightly but surely, in one upper corner. Quick visual inspection reveals no breaks in the flashing in that corner, nor any obvious breaks in the skylight itself. It’s a two-part assembly: a frame that fits down over the curb (and flashing), and another frame that fits over the first and is then screwed to it, which carries the light.
I put Visqueen (is that spelled right?) over the skylight and tied it down in a way that permits water to run down onto the flashing, as a way of testing flashing vs. skylight, and after one serious rainstorm, no new water leaked in — so I’m inclined to thinking it’s the skylight.
Before I pop for a new skylight, I’m considering caulking — silicone, say — at the edges of the light where it contacts the frame that carries it, in case the seal between light and frame has failed. Is this a logical move? Any other tests I should be running?
