Lessons I learned on the job today
Had a real learning experience using new tools and techniques (to me).
I am repairing exterior columns that were rotted, chemically stabilized the rotted part as best I could, filled it with auto body filler and bought rubber baseboard mouldings (2 profiles) to satisfy the customer.
Ask the manufacturer: The moulding guys told me what construction adhesive to use to glue the 2 profiles together. Not what the specialty store recommended at 50% more.
Rent tools before you buy: My new Paslode finishing nailer cannot accept a full clip of 2″ nails because the slot is too narrow. Porter Cable was easier to load.
Don’t glue on a mock-up: To glue the 2 profiles I tried the adhesive + clamps and finishing nails to register at home last week. Once I got working I nailed the first (larger) profile and then glued and nailed the smaller one.
Lobby for glue trim nails: Since I was going into rotted, filled columns, I had to nail on the angle to make it hold while the adhesive set. Plus, bungee cords to keep it tight.
Use 2″ nails: I thought using 1″ trim ones would be better, but nope.
Nail the top first, then the bottom of the profile.
Caulk like mad.
Leave some time for the repairs after the repairs.
Use good quality paint.
At my age, my fingers & knees arrive at work an hour after I do.

These old buildings came be ridiculous. Now in hindsight I realize I should have went ahead and trued the whole thing up. Now it's a real custom fit on each piece of interior work. Ya live and ya learn. Glad the three dimensional trapziods are done tho' :o)
Half of good living is staying out of bad situations, the other half gets so complex I don't deal with it.
I never had a problem with character, people have been telling me I was one ever since I was a kid.
