So what’s the advantage of lite weight joint compound over all purpose? How much lighter is it?

Tim Mooney explained some stuff about joint compound in this post:

Pick up a bucket of All Purpose and then pick up a bucket of Plus Three and that will tell you a lot.
AP is better for taping and bedding, but it shrinks like crazy. Plus Three hardly shrinks at all, is smoother to finish, and easier to sand.
I use Plus 3 for all my finish coats.
If I'm working only one room or a little more, I use Easy Sand 90 to set my tape and do the first filler coat. If I'm doing more than I can complete in a day, I use Plus 3 for the filler coat, then more Plus 3 for the finish.
Water it down like soup, and add a little dish soap to it. It will float on like silk and smell nice too. --------------------------------------------------------
