Little Giant Ladder

kbd | Posted in Tools for Home Building on August 28, 2009 04:27am

Check out this deal on the 5ft ladder. For $129 plus $5 shipping is the best I’ve seen. http://www.woot.com/

The little giant ladders are way overpriced

werner & keller both make comparable models that are way cheaper

even less is cosco. I purchased 2 that size on sale at menards for either 69.00 or 79.00, i cant remember which

At least the LG ladders are made in the USA and not China.

Cheap junk from China has a price.

Are the Werner or Keller versions made in China? I didnt think they were, but maybe I am wrong

The cosco probably is though, it is kinda cheap

That put my mind at rest. <g> We bought two last time Costco had them in the store. They were the 21' models and that has proved really handy for my work as it will go places my Werner 17' multi will not - like to the top of a 2 story bldg. That said, the Werner is a better ladder. Smoother action. But the Cosco is holding up. Love to find a Werner 21' multi at Costco. The prices were around $100, which is attractive. The ToolBear

I agree the Little Giants are pricey but if you can find one at a trade show or sometimes at the state fair they can be had for a good price. The newest generation of Little Giant (Little Giant Revolution XE) has some nice features that haven't shown up on the knockoffs yet. Like the quick release locking levers, 20% lighter and new stronger more stable hinge. I bought the 22' ladder this summer with two work platforms for 429.00 (IIRC) and have been really happy with it.

Regardless of which brand you buy, the style of ladder really is useful. After I bought mine- I realized I had no use for my 10' step ladder or my 7-13 Werner (Cable-Installers) step/extension ladder.Probably the most useful is the ability to set up the step ladder orientation a bit off-center, allowing you to hug the wall much closer than you could otherwise.I bought my first LG used, then found a bunch of them (M22, 1A) on clearance at Sam's club.I recently picked up a M17 1A on CL with the alum platform and the wheels for $130.When HD was clearing out Gorilla stuff a few years back, they had the work platforms on clearance for $3 - reg $59.You gotta watch the LG'ss you buy though - probably all of the lighter weight Type 1 models are made in China.I bought the crazy Little Jumbo 4 step fold-out ladder - darn thing IS made in China!JT

I just got my M17 Type 1 Little Giants from the Woot Deal mentioned at the start of this thread.  They are made in USA - that's what it says on the sticker anyway.

Costco usually has a LG rep in the stores about twice a year and they offer all models at a pretty good price and usually toss in a bunch of accessories on the deal- leg leveler, work platform, etc.=====Zippy=====

I was in Costco today and they have an LG "mega-lite", a Costco "exclusive". It is a 300# rated ladder 17ft, and weights 31#.The standard LG is 35 and the new Revolution XE is 28#.The web has it list for $199.99.IIRC the store had a sign that said $139, normally 169..

Yeah, I've seen those. I think they have them all the time. My earlier post was about the regular ladders, which they don't ordinarily stock. A LG rep comes to the store with samples of their standard models: all 1A, made in USA, etc. You order and pay for that day, and the actual ladder and freebie accessories are shipped to you from the factory. Freight is included in the price. The rep I spoke to said he usually works trade shows, and that the prices at the Costco sale are the lowest they ever go. He might have been blowing smoke....My recollection is they did the sale in November to get the Xmas market and again in late June to get father's day.=====Zippy=====

That's a great price.  If I didn't already have one, I would pick it up.  I think they are way better built than the knock-offs.  Their only problem is that they are heavy.

    1. brad805 | Aug 28, 2009 10:46pm | #4

I agree with you on that one.  More often I grab a fiberglass ladder, but the Giant sure is handy in sometimes.

      1. NYFLOORGUY | Aug 29, 2009 02:27am | #5

I bought Gorilla "Limited Edition'' for $99 two years ago. Still works great.

        1. Huntdoctor | Aug 29, 2009 03:07am | #6

Is the limited edition the fiberglass one?

Do the knock-offs have a work platform that attaches to a ladder rung? How about the adjustable leg for uneven terrains?.View Image

          2. DonCanDo | Aug 29, 2009 01:13pm | #8

I have 2 of the Gorilla ladders that are knock-offs of the Little Giant.  The Little Giant accessories (work platform, leg levelers) are 100% compatible.

However, the last time I was at Home Depot they had a Werner knock-off that looked like it might not be compatible because the rungs were different.

There's no question in my mind that the Little Giant ladders are better.  I've used them.  They operate much more smoothly.  But I also agree with the previous poster who said that they are over-priced.  That's why I have the Gorilla ladders which cost about half as much for the 19' version #model 22# and a third as much for the 11' version #model 13#.

Werner also makes their own adj leg extensions..

I'll stick with the LG original.

Last thing I need is to be testing the theory of gravity thinking..... I wish I bought the heavier ladder.

          5. woodarama | Aug 29, 2009 01:34pm | #9

I have the Werner version and the LG work platform fits perfectly.

          6. NYFLOORGUY | Aug 31, 2009 04:30am | #15

The uneven leg would have saved me alot of aggravation.

          7. NYFLOORGUY | Aug 31, 2009 04:28am | #14

No, it's aluminum. It has the stabilizers, a paint bucket platform, and 2 brackets to make mini scaffold bases. I only use it around the house. It's a 17 footer I beleive.

          8. Huntdoctor | Aug 31, 2009 04:40am | #16

ThanksI have a fiberglass gorilla 17' from HDI have only seen 1 other like itPaid $99 4 years ago

          9. NYFLOORGUY | Aug 31, 2009 04:54am | #17

            probably the same one.

Note that is a Type 1 ladder (250 lb). The more common "advertisted on TV, and I think that ones sold at HD, etc, are 1A (300lb). As are most of the knock off's.

But it is 5 lb lighter than the 1A. And all of the knocks off that I have checked have been heaver than the LG.

But it is still a good buy.
