To wire a dimmer for low voltage ,electronic transformer powered lights it is necessary to make a connection to neutral at the switch. Now most`of the time I run the power to the octagon box then out and back to the switch. However in the box I wish to use I ran the power to the switch box and on to the octagon. The guy in the lighting store maintains that there has to be a “clean” neutral in the switch box(run direct from the panel not the one carrying the unbalanced load from the light circuit.Does this make sense or is it a case of a spandex covered ,interior design ,air head? 😉

First of all standard dimmers will often work with electronic transformers. Try it.
2nd, IIRC, the instructions for Lutron then don't use a neutral.
Or is this a X-10 or similar. They require a neutral.
In any case, even if you do require a neutral the guy is blowing smoke.
Ask him to show you the manufactures installation instructions.
Or download them from the net and show them to him.
