I just bought my 1000 gallon LP contract for the winter. At 100% prepaid, current cost is $1.21/gallon. This is in rural northern IL.
Am always curious as to what the going rates, contracted or present sale price, in the different parts of the country. What’s LP (or NG or oil) cost in your neck of the woods?

I am moving out your way ! In upstate New York, they just told my wife $1.99.9 a gallon yesterday. That's the lock-in rate for this year with our 1,000 gallon tank.
It's getting expensive to stay warm.
Where in upstate NY?? I'm planning on moving back there within a month, up near Gouverneur, St. Lawrence County. Used to deal with Agway energy when I was there a few years ago, they got bought out by Suburban propane.....If you aren't one of the one's I'm talking about, you shouldn't have any complaints....
We are in the Albany area, we have suburban propane.
That's a pretty high rate, given the fact it's all bought on futures pricing. I remember a few years back when it was in the 1.10 range and people were complaining then.......what's gasoline doing now anyway?? Up home it's around 1.39, this morning here I paid 1.39, I paid 1.17 per gallon this past Monday......If you aren't one of the one's I'm talking about, you shouldn't have any complaints....
In 2002 we were paying $1.07 , you must be closer to the source and it's not as cold where you are.
I just looked out my office window at the gas station next door, reg gas $2.55.9, premium $2.79.9 and diesel $2.79.9
Paule -
You're paying under $1.50 for a gallon of gasoline ??? Around here (San Jose, CA) it's running between $2.50 and $2.75 for 87 octane. Diesel is just over $3.00.
I've quit looking at jobs more than a few miles away. - lol
my mistake....it was 2 bucks and the change..not 1 buck and change....I just sent a corrected message to all.......If you aren't one of the one's I'm talking about, you shouldn't have any complaints....
Ok, that makes more sense................I was ready to pack up and head east!! - lol
My mistake....just realized....I paid 2.17 this past Monday and it was 2.38 this morning...not in the dollar range...got confused.....my apologies.....we did have it at 1.98 about 2 weeks ago in the Yukon area though.....If you aren't one of the one's I'm talking about, you shouldn't have any complaints....
There are various rates on the contract offered through my supplier, one price for a signed contract promise to buy xxx gallons, a little better price if you pay 10% up front and the best price for 100% prepaid.
We promise to buy 1,600 gallons and we pay a few hundred up front.
What does anyone in the North East pay for propane this year ?
I spoke to our propane supplier, he claimed ignorance to the prices reflected in some of the past posts. Since we were "good customers and they wanted to keep our business" he reduced our rate from $1.99 to $1.85.
Every little bit helps. If other customers don't ask for a lower rate, are they paying too much ?
I don't know about that. I "shop" my contract every few years to keep my normal supplier honest. I haven't had anyone beat his price so I have never asked for a lower rate. For a few pennys on the gallon I wouldn't bother, for 10% or more I would ask for a match.
If we shop our price we would have to buy our underground tank, as it is currently leased. Back in the late 80's there was a propane "shortage",the suppliers around us were not taking any new customers. I was using suburban propane's 100# temporary tanks and when I wanted to switch over to a permanent tank they told me I was a new customer because I had returned the old tanks. After some arm twisting they agreed to supply us with propane, but they also had a "tank shortage". At the time we had to use suburban, as we were new customers to the other companies.
Now suburban also owns agway in this area, so that gives us one less choice. If we switch to another company and they go under, suburban may charge us a higher rate or it may come at a time when they are not accepting new customers.
I bought a 500 gallon underground tank a few years ago. As I recall it cost about $350 and the took the old above ground tank as a partial trade. Maybe having their tank buried in your yard might be a little bit of a bargaining chip. If they won't beat their competitiors price, they can just come and dig it up.
I could buy the tank at any time but I thought it is better to lease it, if it has a problem they will service it. I had to dig the hole and bury it, this tank looks like a small submarine.
I just checked with another supplier they were only a penny less and I would have to buy their tank and remove the one we have now. No savings that way.

here everyone that is establihed buys their tanks. they then can shop fuel for less instead of having to take what is forced on them. service is cheap and more than likely it is something you can do yurself. about every 15 years or so something acts up on a tank... repairs are about 150$ on the average...
Is that for underground tanks ? I was worried that if we had a problem I would have to dig it up and pull it out if it was our tank.
It would cost about $2,500 for the tank to buy it, it cost about $90. a year to lease it and the company is responsible for it.

we don't bury the tanks for the most part... some do... what acts up is the valving.. leased tanks avg cost of fuel is 10 to 12 cents a gallon more... times that thousand of gallons and OUCH!!!
incorperate it into the landscaping or put it behind a small fence..
The cost to buy would be an initial cost or leasing spreads cost out 27 years. The propane would cost the same. It would have been hard to hide a 1,000 gallon tank above ground. At our old home we had a 500 gallon above ground hiding in the bushes, I never liked to look at it.
Does your propane come from Canada ? I just called my supplier, their explanation for my much higher cost is our propane comes from Texas. We live 150 miles by road from Canada and 2,000 miles from Texas. I guess George needs the money more than we do.
I don't know. I assume that different areas are subject to different market forces, supply/demand, etc. Ill have to ask.
$1.69 in Western Colorado
$1.24 if bought before Sept. 15. at least $1.34 after Sept. 15.
I was wondering if I could stick a hose up the daughters boy friends rear and use a small part of his gas for fuel. I am sure it would not take more then an hour to get all I would need for the winter.

Where are you located?
Here in NH I'll pay $1.525/gal for propane this year, based on over 700 gal. usage (lesser annual usage costs about 30 cents more per gal.) . That's up about 10 cents from last year. This is through a local energy co-op (http://www.otnrgy.com) and Eastern Propane. Others I know are paying over $2.00 per gallon, but their annual usage may be less.
I don't have to pre-pay or anything, that's the nice thing about the co-op. It's $25 per year for membership. For propane, they only contract with Eastern. For oil, they work with 2 or 3 different companies. Other than paying for the coop membership and calling Eastern to let them know I'm a member, there's no other effort. It was a no-brainer for me, since the house was already set up with Eastern when we bought it last year. We have a 325 gal. above-ground tank. They don't spell out any tank rental charge, so I assume it's included in the fuel price.
Don
We use about 1,500 gallons a year in New York and pay 1.85. I wonder if we have more taxes on our propane ?
I just ordered in northeast Ohio at $1.69 9. Sure beats $2 but wish I'd have your 1.21.
as Buddha said to the hotdog vendor .... "make me one with everything"
Seems like my supplier is treating me well.
