Lp Smart lap siding painting process
When i bought this pre-primed siding at Menards here in lakeville Mn, they recommended 2 coats of latex primer & 2 coats of Latex top coat. Manufacturer recommends- “For best results use a high-quality 100% acrylic latex exterior paint, specially formulated for use on wood and engineered wood substrates is highly recommended” Any feed back from you guys on this? I will likely be spraying it with airless equipment after siding is installed. Also, i tried blind & face nailing, i like the face nailed beter, seems more solid, can i caulk the flush nailed nails? or should i sink them in a little 1st? i am using a stick framing nailer. Thanks again in advance.

Install instructions from LP says that all face nails must be caulked to prevent moisture intrusion, so if there is ever a warranty issue, they may not cover if no caulk is applied to nails. Your right it does feel like a better attachment face nailing, but all those caulked nails will probably be unsightly. I would not suggest using a stick nailer. A siding coil nailer is a better option. With blind nailing I actually prefer to use a roof coil gun with ring shank nails. The large head of the roofing nail really holds siding well.
Also, two coats of primer seems a bit excessive. Especially, on a product that’s already factory primed. Follow LP’s instructions as that is what will determine warranty considerations etc. Also, in general best not to follow the advice of salesmen at the big box stores. As a pro builder the advice they give is terrible and most have not built anything in their life. In truth you probably have more experience than most of them. They are good at selling product and advising on how to get product, but outside of that do not take their advice.
