Does anyone have a job (or had a job) as a Maintenance Supervisor? Such as Director of Maintenance at a College, Public School, Hospital, Shopping Mall, Old Folks Home, what have you.
With some, the job is strictly supervisory. In other jobs the crew is small and you work alongside the crew.
Did you like the job? Did it pay well?
I worked as a maintenance man while I was in college. There were 15-20 of us fixing leaky faucts, fixing toilets, making repairs after weekend parties and vandalism, cleaning up vomit, or whatever needed to be done. Back then in the 70’s the maintenance supervisor had a desk job, a secretary, and what looked to be a pretty easy job to me.

This might not count but I was in maintenance for XV years. Part of the time I was weekend supervisor in charge of four including myself.
There is a big difference between maintenance and construction. In construction it's often the case of bang it out and get er done. In maintenance, quality counts since it is the key to a sucessful operation. Ideally, all the weak points are weeded out. For instance, if door hinges keep breaking, they get replaced with higher quality hinges that won't break. Over a period of time, procedures are developed to best deal with any situation. Eventually nothing breaks anymore, the right spare parts are in stock and the mundane tasks are easy to train. Then the supervisor has plenty of time for coffee and the crossword puzzle.
I don't know what the pay is but it's a steady job in one location so it is posible to move nearby and eliminate the gas guzzling auto.
