Making cabin “maintenance free” exterior?

user-6165367 | Posted in General Discussion on March 13, 2020 11:25pm

Hello. We bought our family cabin off of mom. Gradually, the plan is to make the exterior maintenance free…. prefinished soffits, fascia, pvc Windows, etc.

this post specifically pertains to the exterior walls, and how exactly to do this.

cabin is standard 2 x 4 framing, insulated walls, vapor barrier and sheathed with 3/8’ “chalet wall” (I guess t100 is what Americans call it ). Chalet wall is painted, and windows are wooden brick mold, nailed into the framing.

id like to replace the windows, and wrap the cabin with house wrap, and then siding, or fake stone.

my question is should I re sheath with plywood/osb, or can I simply housewrap over the painted t100? Just worried about possibly “traping” paint fumes between the housewrap, and vapor barrier.

sorry if this is a silly question.

You probably mean T1-11. It's serving as your structural sheathing now. If it's not rotted, there's no reason to replace it with other sheathing. And there's absolutely no reason to worry about "paint fumes" here. They just don't exist. Any VOCs in the paint have offgassed long ago.

That’s what I meant. Been shopping for a tundra, so maybe it was still in my head when I said t100.

Yes, it’s structural sheathing, but also the finished product. If I can just housewrap over it then it’s simple. Ya know the windows out, wrap, new windows, and paint free covering of my choice.

Yep, that simple. Sometimes you win.

    Yes! It’s a win!

While I’m here, is there any type of product that will get my brother in law off his ass, put the beer down, and actually help out at the cabin instead of watching everyone work?

Preferably I’d be looking at an aerosol spray for deployment, but also would consider a powder to add to his food/beer.

I’d prefer fast acting, and long lasting. Ive tried asking nicely, I've tried shaming techniques, but nothing seems to work.

First off - Is he someone whose help you really want? I definitely have relatives who should stay on their asses.

Failing that, maybe make a Cabin Rule that says no beer until the day's work is done.

He’s not someone I’d want doing, serious, work, but it’d be nice if he could help paint, and even help, carry, groceries that we bought, and he will eat

Try telling him what my mother used to tell me. "Get off your dead ass and on your dying feet."

try hardie horizontal lap siding. looks good, lasts long time holds paint really well

I agree with edwardh1, I've had on my cabin in Big Bear for 18 years and looks as good today as when I installed it. Zero maintenance for it I just wish there was a magic paint for the wood eaves.

How is hardieboard maintenance free if I have to paint?

      1. andy_engel | Mar 15, 2020 06:36pm | #10

I've had Hardie on my house for 20 years. The paint has faded a bit, but there's no peeling whatsoever. I'm thinking I'll be dead before having to repaint.

Two coats after installation. 18 years and still looks great. It's a lot like stucco
