its getting a little late in the year but I finally have some time for this. Ive never made windows before, but have done plenty of carpentry.
These storms will be set over original 1894 wood double hung windows. The plan is once the storms are in, i can finally take the sashes out and rebuild those as well. My local millshop has a decent stock of 1x vertical grain doug fir on hand, so i was thinking about using that.
The question is, is there a size at which i need to step up to 5/4 or thicker framing? Similar on glass – is there a size where 1/8″ standard should be increased to double-strength? I am planning on using 1 over 1 mortise/tenon construction, and most windows are in the area of 50″x30″ (so ~25×30 glass top and bottom) .
Finally, i know alot of windows have a dado slot in the top rail for the glass to slide into instead of a rabbet. Should i duplicate this detail or is it ok to just rabbet and point all four sides?

I’ve worked with and on sash for a long time and can’t say I’ve ever seen a slot in the top rail that the glass slid through.
So,
Glazing all 4 sides would be the way I’d do it.
I’d ask the glass shop on single vs dbl strength.
Appreciate the info, ill plan to rabbet/point all four sides since its easier to build. FWIW, In all of my window sashes, the top rail and bottom of the meeting rail have a 3/16" groove where you slide the glass up into (maybe to make it more secure?), then you point the bottom and two sides, then glaze all four. Dunno if the thinking was it makes in nearly impossible for the glass to "fall out" if the glazing failed?
I understand you now, yes I have seen what you mention, the groove in the top rail.
Perhaps I can get a reprieve for my miss readings. The wife and I are baking numerous loaves of my Slovenian grandmothers Potica recipe. A Christmas tradition now in its third generation at least in my stomach. You should see the condition of our hand written recipe. Remnants of many past droppings decorate it.
Have a good time in your project and remember to seal/finish all surfaces of your sash before glazing!
And a very a merry Christmas!
ill try my hand at making windows, but you've got me there on baking! Enjoy the results - happy holidays!
1/8 is double strength. 3/32 is single
