Anybody have any luck trying to match the patina of old Southern Yellow Pine? We have tried lots of stains, sealers and wood conditioners. We can get the pumpkin color with fruitwood and golden oak, but the earlywood picks up too much stain and gets darker than the latewood, the opposite of what we are trying to achieve. Best results so far are with a sealer…Livos or sanding sealer, followed by stain, and amber shellac, but it is still too yellow and not enough contrast. Acorn

I would try a waterbases aniline dye. The advantage is that it uniforumly colors the wood. Homestead (Jeff Jewitt) has these in a premixed concentrate and also dry powders.
Scroll down to the Honey Amber.
You can mix other colors to tweak it if needed. And you can apply a pigmented stail over it if you want to add just a litle more color to the grain.
