I need to build a stair with treads 12 inches wide and 7 feet long. The ones I’m replacing used 2 x 12 for the tread which cupped very quickly. Any ideas for something that will remain stable over that length and width? I can spece the stringers as close as necessary. There are just three risers. The stairs will be outdoors and will be painted. Any help is greatly appreciated.

CAHVG fir...
>> CAHVG fir...That would be clear, all heart, vertical grain, in case you're wondering. ;)Since you're going to be painting them, I would think seriously about concrete. Read up on making concrete counter tops. Shouldn't be too difficult to cast a nice bullnose tread.

Just a related question on a topic I am clueless about...
Why wouldn't you just do a glue-up like you would for a table top? Or maybe you could, but it would just be easier/cleaner to use the fir, one piece tread?
Help a framer out, would ya? ;)
fir tread is a traditional material around here... it is very decay resistant , especially if painted.. we work with 1x12 fir treads on alot of jobs
so... glue one up .. or pick up the phone and ask for a couple 14' s..
last week we installed (5) 9' ...... they stock 14' at Liberty CedarMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Thanks... these are things I don't know, but like to know. You know?
