Steve,
Have you heard of Ultra-Set? It’s marketed under the brand “Hydroment”, which is made by Bostik. I’ve never used it, but have a couple gallons ready to use on a tub project. People who have used it in my area love it. It’s troweled on with a notched trowel, then leveled with a flat one. I expect any supplier could get it or you could email or call Bostik for a local supplier. They have a web site, too.

Steve,
Check out the "tiling floors" video that taunton sells(I believe you can even order it on this web site). It stars the same Michael Byrne tile guy. He shows the technique, and if I recall correctly, quotes the name of the manufacturer he uses for the membrane.
Good Luck,
Greg

Tom, have you checked with the manuf. on Ultra-Set's suitability for show pan usage? It appears to me to be a waterproofing membrane for general use such as surrounds. These types of membranes, of which Nobleseal is one, are not suitable for use as pan liners.
Also, Rich's point about sloping the mortar bed that the CPE lies on is very important. If it's not done, water may accumulate and promote mold growth.

JT,
Yep, I had a rather lengthy chat with the tech people at Bostik. I'm planning to use it to waterproof an indoor hot-tub. They said "no problem." Bostik recommends Ultra-Set for everything where you might use any waterproofing membrane. Uses indicated on the literature they sent me include shower pans and walls, lavatories, fountains, kitchens, swimming pools, tub enclosures, spas/hot tubs and more. It can be used as a tile adhesive or thinset can be applied directly on top of it (they recommend their brand of thinset, of course). The literature shows details of all the recommended uses.

*If you are planning on spreading thinset mortar directly over UltraSet, be sure to do so within 72 hours of applying the UltraSet.If you don't think you will be able to finish tile installation within that time period, you can just skimcoat the UltraSet with a thin coat of thinset.Failure to cover the UltraSet with thinset within 72 hours will result in breaking of bond 'tween thinset and Ultraset. To be safe, I just plan on skimming the entire area with thinset.Remember to wear throw away gloves and an old long sleeve shirt.

Awhile back Michael Byrne had an article in FHB where he used 40 mil CPE to shape a leak-proof shower pan prior to installing an tile shower surround. From the vast number of tile people who must be out there, can anybody steer me in the direction of a supplier for this material, or who manufactures it, so that I can find a distributor locally. Also, is there any newer stuff on the market for this application or a better method of water proofing in this area of the bath?
Just thought I'd ask and see what I could come up with!
Wishfully Thinking...Steve
*Haven't tried it yet but find a dura deck dealer. It's a walkable roof membrane 60 mill thick with welded seams. Has to be installed by a dealer for warranty but the stuff is incredibly tough. Call duradeck @816-421-5830
*Gee Steve, have you tried Tile Suppliers? We get ours from a local Tile/Masonry Supply House. We also use NobelSeal, EPDM, and a Hot Mop, all with good success. When I was young and stupid, I had some callbacks on showers, but none over the past 10 years. The only thing that I can stress, is to make a mortar sandwich. The material in order of application should be Subfloor, 30 lbs felt, flat mortar bed, CPE or other waterproofing, and the final sloped mortar bed.
*Thanks for the suggestions guys, you've all been a great help!
*Actually, the "flat mortar bed" Scooter talks about should be sloped, per TCA specs. I generally go just a bit less than half a bubble out on my two foot level. This results in 1/8" per foot.
