Scott,I used Paslode staples like you described on a cedar siding job in 1984. these were cedar shingles not the handsplit shakes. I was just starting over after leaving a partnership, and that was the tool I had at that time. I knew these staples weren't good for cedar handsplits, because I had seen them rust out after about 10 years. But the shingles were on a verticle surface and they lay much tighter than hand splits, so I took a chance.
Last year I did some work on the guy's roof, and while I was there I checked the siding. The staples and the shingles were doing fine. I always felt it was probably the wrong application, but it worked out fine. Nowadays I have a Paslode coil nailer made specifically for cedar shakes & shingles and wouldn't use anything else. Hope my ambivalent answer helps you decide-John
*I used galv staples on my new house in 1990 and they worked fine. After six years we added on and the stapled shingles were very difficult to remove. The 2" length might be overkill, you just need to get through the sheathing. I used 1-3/8" staples over 1/2" OSB and felt. 6" expo
*I have been using a Porter Cable medium crown stapler for white cedar shingles for quite a while now with very good luck. I use hand nailed SS ring shanks where the fasteners are exposed and staples every where else. The electro gal. holds up well but SS staples are around if you can find them. They are a LOT cheaper than SS nails. I find the staples hold better than ring shank nails and the stapler was half the price of a coil nailer and has NEVER jambed.Ron
*I wouldn't think of using anything but a stapler for shingles, anymore. You won't either after you try it. Try to find the ss staples. If your machine is a 7/16" crown, then check a Senco dealer. They have them or can get them. I think they cost about three times what galvanized do, but it's not a big percentage of the cost of a shingle job.I saw a wall of shingles that had been fastened with galv peeling off a house a while back, though, to be fair, this house was exposed to every wind that blew and it was right beside the Atlantic Ocean. Ten years old.
*Thank you to all that responded to my question about stapling shingles your help was much appreciatted. Thanks again Scott
*Thank you to all who replied to my question.
*The staples were probably overdriven. I they were not the staples hold better than nails.
