My family has a an island house in Maine. We’ve got a two layer asphalt roof that is showing wear and some signs of leaks. We’re considering using metal roofing. One roofer said we don’t have to remove the existing roof as the metal roofing is not very heavy. We’d love this option as we wouldn’t have to cart the old shingles off island. I like the look of metal roofing and the color options now available. Should we remove the shingles first? What are important points to be alert to before we make a metal roof choice? Is it less expensive? Will it last longer?

metal will last longer, costs more, nail purloins (2x4) to roof and screw to them, make sure to fix any undulations as gaps will form between sheets, snow will slide off easier so extra weigh not a factor, make sure snow won't slide onto people
*Use your search butttton, this has been discussed extensively lately.
